Cloisonné, as an art form, involves applying various colored enamel onto the surface of copper objects, with copper or gold and silver wires surrounding the patterns, and then firing them at high temperatures. When freshly taken out of the fire, cloisonné appears mostly black, but it reveals its colorful appearance after cooling down. This technique originated in the Ming Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Jingtai, initially featuring only blue color, hence the name "Jingtai Blue" or "Cloisonné."
The price range of cloisonné enamel generally varies from thousands to several hundred thousand yuan, so it's important to be cautious when making a purchase. Cloisonné involves the use of colored enamel on the surface of copper objects to create patterns. Gold and silver wires are embedded around the patterns, and the piece is then fired at high temperatures. Here are a few ways to distinguish the quality of cloisonné enamel:

Color: The choice of materials is crucial for cloisonné enamel. Counterfeit cloisonné enamel pieces usually use substitutes for enamel instead of genuine materials.

Luster: Regardless of the color, genuine cloisonné enamel needs to be fired with tobacco ash to create a sand-like texture. In ancient times, it was polished with gold and fine stones. The surface should be smooth and shiny.

Appearance: Genuine cloisonné enamel has a smooth and rounded appearance with a substantial body and graceful shape. Counterfeit pieces often have rougher appearances and a lesser quality feel.

Choice of glaze: The selection of glaze determines the glossy and hard texture of the crystal glass, giving a clear and distinct overall look. Counterfeit cloisonné enamel is less durable and lacks long-lasting luster.

Glaze color: The choice of glaze color affects the quality of the finished product. Counterfeit cloisonné enamel often exhibits uneven coloring.

Composition: Cloisonné enamel masters require a certain foundation in painting and artistic aesthetics. Thus, their skill can be observed from the details of the composition.
